6ix Takes - April 20th
1. Perfect Night
Friday night was a great one if you’re a Toronto sports fan. Six of the city’s pro sports teams played and for the first time in history, they were all successful in winning their respective games. The Maple Leafs beat the Bruins 2-1, the Raptors took down the Orlando Magic 98-93, the Blue Jays defeated the Oakland Athletics 5-1, TFC pulled out a 4-3 victory over Minnesota FC, the Marlies rolled over Rochester and the Wolfpack dominated the Barrow Raiders 52-26. Some of these matchups meant more than other but it’s always nice to look at theScore app and see your cities teams flourish on any given night.
2. Leafs Breaking Drake’s Curse (Hopefully)
The 6ix God was present at the Maple Leafs playoff game on Wednesday dawning the teams blue and white jersey instead of his usual Raptors garb. The combination of the Leafs losing that game and Drakes track record with being a fan of unsuccessful teams brought upon an irrational yet expected reaction from fans. Instead of blaming the poor start to the game and the horrid PK, Leafs supporters were putting this one on Toronto’s favourite rapper. However, they were able to recover and survive the curse to put them one win away from getting out of the first round since the ’03-’04 season.
3. Jays Win Their First Series of The Season
The Jays are starting to heat up over this past week, winning five of their last seven games including a series win over the Minnesota Twins. It took last year’s team just two series to pick up their first series victory compared to six this year. They still haven’t been able to get over the .500 hump but their first series win was a step in the right direction. You can bet more of these will be coming as young stud, Vlad Jr. is set to be called up sooner rather than later.
4. Playoff Siakam (Again)
This isn’t the first time and certainly won’t be the last time I mention Spicy Pin these playoffs. This Friday night, he became the first Raptor since Chris Bosh to score 30+ points with 10+ rebounds in a playoff game. He is averaging superstar numbers through this first series with 24.3 PPG, 10 REB in 40 mins of play. He is one of three players to average more than 22 points and 8 rebounds this postseason (Embiid and Harden are the others) and joins Lebron and Giannis for having a 30 point 10 rebound game without a turnover. He’s been elite so far and if he can keep up this run of play, he’ll be a HUGE part of the Raptors playoff success.
5. Pozuelo Continues to Impress
TFC’s new star midfielder has allowed all of Toronto to forget about Sebastian Giovinco leaving this past offseason. In his first four games with his new squad, Pozuelo has four goals, including two in two minutes on Friday, and four assists leading them to second place in the Eastern Conference. Not only has Pozuelo been a part of almost every goal since coming to Toronto, but his goals and setups have also been a work of art.
Here are the two goals he scored this week!
6. Galvis Shows His Defensive Ability
I’ve praised Freddy Galvis for his bat many times so far this season but on Saturday afternoon Galvis made the catch of the year (so far) robbing Josh Phegley of a base hit in the 8th inning with a barehanded catch. I’ll let the play speak for itself.
